Sino Iron recently hosted a group of female students from Karratha Senior High School and St Luke’s College, to hear from women at CPM, on what it’s like to work in the mining industry.

CPM Human Resources Manager Luisa Geary, Mine Supervisor Mim Grosser and Logistics Coordinator Nat Sparkman, took part in a panel discussion over lunch at Eramurra Village, to share their career stories with students.

The CPM panellists were joined by colleagues from across site and the Perth office, some of whom participated in a site tour with the students earlier in the day.

Luisa, started her HR mining career at just 23 years of age, explained that no day was the same in her line of work.

“I have to deal with a range of staffing scenarios, which come from across the whole organisation - from our truck drivers and engineers to our colleagues in China,” she said.

Mim Grosser, shared her career progression from dump truck driver to lead mine controller, rolling out the company’s new fleet management system, and mentoring new recruits.

“This event recognises the diversity of our workforce and acknowledges the achievements of women at Sino Iron,” Mim said.

The high school students were surprised at the variety of career paths available to them.

Before mining, Nat had a career in aviation – she now combines these interests, taking on the role of Logistics Coordinator at the Cape Preston (Sino Iron) Aerodrome.

St Luke’s Head Girl Taylor Sparks said that it was a fantastic experience.

“This trip was a privilege to attend and the young ladies who were lucky enough to go learnt a great deal, not only about women in the mining industry but about mining as a whole,” she said.

“A big thank you to CITIC Pacific Mining for making the visit possible.”

The tour coincided with International Women’s Day.
