WA businesses ATCO and Powerlift Industries are behind the build and assembly of a new gymnasium that’s just officially opened at CITIC Pacific Mining’s (CPM) Pilbara magnetite operation, Sino Iron.

The building is significantly larger than the existing facilities, utilising an open plan design to maximise the available exercise space.

ATCO Structures & Logistics built the 250sqm custom-built gym over the course of eight weeks in their Kwinana yards. Delivery to site was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and WA’s regional travel restrictions.

With the recent easing of local restrictions, Karratha-based Powerlift were soon at site to take care of the installation and fit-out.

CPM’s Manager Facilities & Logistics, Wei Tang, said giving workers a comfortable home-away-from-home was critical to staff attraction and retention – particularly during COVID.

“Our people work very hard - downtime is important for them to recharge and refresh. We want them to be as comfortable here as they are at home, so that means providing all the amenities they are used to, whether that is working out in a gym, playing sport, swimming or enjoying a quiet beer with mates,” Wei said.

The new gym is themed towards the popular discipline of CrossFit with specialist equipment such as weighted sleds and monkey bars, to complement the other Cardio and Weights-focused gyms which have also been fully refurbished.

Facilities are open 24 hours a day, providing staff the opportunity to work-out whatever time of the day suits their roster.
